Is it or is it not an actual island?

Crab Island is a popular holiday destination for both Floridians and tourists. Clear waters, gorgeous scenery, and a unique setting are what separates Crab Island from other Florida beach destinations. Over the years, it has become a popular party spot, only accessible by boat. It’s a perfect half-day destination for when you’re in need of some fun, fabulous beach atmosphere, and a strong dose of Vitamin D.

In this article, we’ll explain everything you need to know about visiting Crab Island. Whether it’s your first visit or an annual tradition, there are a couple of things to know that will make your experience even better. But first thing’s first – did you know it’s not actually an island? It was, back in the day, but the water became so shallow it doesn’t really qualify anymore. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worthy of your visit!

Only accessible by boat

Although the shallow water makes it look tempting to swim all the way to Crab Island, it’s recommended to take a boat. Its distance from Destin shouldn’t be underestimated — swimming to it may even be fatal. You can rent your very own party boat or even take a boat taxi, depending on your personal preference.

The area is known for gorgeous water, but it’s actually the best at high tide. It’s when you can take some of the best photos for your Instagram and just enjoy the paradise. Luckily, you can find out when the tide will be high on almost any weather forecast.

Don’t forget to come prepared — if you’re renting a boat, make sure to pack everything you need for the day with you. Crab Island does have plenty of vendors, however, in most cases, you will have to pay with cash.

Keep in mind that there are no restrooms on Crab Island. When choosing a boat, try to find one with a restroom. It may not seem like a big deal but it will save you a lot of frustration and nerves after you realize you don’t have to drive 30 minutes to the nearest toilet.

Get the party started

Although Crab Island is largely considered a party destination with bustling music and plenty of drinks, it’s a popular family spot and a tradition for many. A fun spot for families tends to be Crab Island Water Park, an inflatable obstacle course on water. You’ll need to purchase a ticket from one of the pontoon boats to play at the Water Park. Family-friendly activities slow down in the afternoon and that’s when the true party begins.

If you’re looking for the best parties, you should visit Crab Island at its busiest times, usually from Memorial to Labor Day. Summertime is without a doubt the best time to party, meet people, and just spend a glorious day in the sun. You can also enjoy live entertainment and DJ sets, providing plenty of good music.

Don’t forget to enjoy the food! While it’s recommended to bring food with you, you can also purchase plenty of food items from the vendors. WaterWorld is without a doubt one of the most popular floating restaurants out there, with a menu featuring plenty of seafood dishes as well as kid-friendly staples.

Remember – selling alcohol is forbidden at Crab Island. If you’re looking to enjoy a good time with alcoholic drinks, you’ll have to bring them yourself. This means that a day at Crab Island might require some planning. But one thing’s for certain – you’ll definitely have an incredible time.
